Founded in 1981 As Cryo-Genetic Laboratory by Dr. George Govette, and was
one of the first Laboratories in the development of Canine Frozen Semen.
The new name CLONE derives from the first letter of each of the words in
the name of their first branch office, Cryo-genetic Laboratory Of New England in Warwick,
Rhode Island.

GEORGE GOVETTE HISTORY
|
In 1965 Dr. George Govette started breeding and exhibiting Weimaraner
dogs as a hobby and is affectionately known as "George the Inseminator" to many breeders in the United States. Knowing that
semen was frozen and stored in the dairy industry, he wondered, could it be possible to freeze semen on dogs ?
In 1979 he attended a veterinary conference given by Dr. Steven Seger titled Semen Freezing in Panda Bears and other
Exotic Species. After the lecture George approached Dr. Seger and asked him if he was having success in freezing semen
on the dog, Dr. Seger responded that “he and his partner Carroll Platz had some success working on a system for
freezing canine semen in pellet form and they were just about finished the project that they called Life Forces”.
Dr.Govette
asked him if he could be part of the new Life Forces program by opening his own canine semen bank under their jurisdiction,
Dr. Seger commented that “he was only going to open centers with veterinarians”.
This setback only made
Dr.Govette more determined to attain information in this field. So he set up a small laboratory
in a veterinary clinic and with the help of many dog breeders friends, who loaned him their studs and bitches, he then researched
and developed his own methods of cryo-preservation of semen, embryos and the preparation of cooled extended semen. In
1982 after 3 years of 7 day weeks and 17 hour days he finally attained tremendous success.
In 1985 Dr. George Govette gave a lecture at the AHHA meeting in New Orleans on Prostate Problems of Stud Dogs and CLONE’S
First Three Years of Success With Frozen Semen Litters since approval by the AKC . At the time of the meeting there were eight
organizations freezing canine semen and only 52 litters registered with the AKC produced from the use of frozen semen. Of
the 52 litters 37 of the litters were produced by Dr. George Govette with Regular Vaginal Inseminations. The other 15 litters were produced by the other 7 organizations and mostly by surgical inseminations.
In
1985 he pioneered the use of an endoscope - Fiber Optics - in examining and photographing the uterus and vaginal tract of bitches
and treating and inseminating them by cannulating the cervix.
In 1987 George was invited to the Swedish Veterinary
College in Uppsala, Sweden to work with Catharina Linde-Forsberg, where they were having great success with the CLONE
semen he had sent them. Through a exchange of research George learned the Trans-cervical Insemination procedure that was used in Norway and Sweden, thus making George the
first person in America capable of practicing and utilizing the extraordinary Trans-cervical technique known as
the Norwegian Pipette System.
In the past 18 years George has perfected extraordinary systems in artificial insemination and semen preservation.
Being one of the founding researchers in the development of Canine Frozen Semen, Dr.Govette's freezing methods are now used
world-wide.
This success is documented by the fact that CLONES’ conception rate was 79 % before the use
of the Trans-cervical Insemination technique and is now 87 % with frozen semen inseminated using the Norwegian Catheter (Trans-cervical
Insemination). These phenomenal figures make CLONE the leader worldwide.
George has also successfully frozen semen
on Cats, Horses and different Birds, including Pigeons as well as some exotic species.
CLONE is the only organization in America capable of practicing
and utilizing the extraordinary Trans-cervical technique know as the Norwegian Pipette System. This system entails passing a small catheter through the bitch's cervix
where the semen is deposited directly into the uterine horns. Most of Clone's competitors in the United States must inseminate
a bitch surgically with the use of anesthesia to produce litters with frozen semen.
The statistical figures of success
make CLONE the leader of all organizations combined world wide. CLONE is also the largest international Canine freezing
organization in the world, with CLONE associates in England, Germany, France, Italy, Sweden, Norway, Finland, Holland, Australia,
New Zealand, Canada, Argentina and Brazil.
There are 18 CLONE-centers in the USA and 13 outside USA, all trained
by CLONE in both Frozen Semen technique and the Chilled Semen system. You can contact your closest CLONE Office
or the main office in the USA for more information. More worldwide CLONE-trained centers are under training. |
